How to make a shepherds crook

The next stage is to boil the horn for 30/40 minutes.
This is to prepare the horn for flattening, or the removal of any natural curl in the horn.
The only time you would not need to flatten the horn is if you wished to make a rams curl stick.

After the boiling, place the horn between two steel plates and press flat.
All of the presses and jigs seen on this web site are home made and not normally available commercially. However if you or a friend can
weld, these presses and jigs are easy to make.
Leave the horn to cool before going on to the next stage.

The horn you are using may have a pronounced concave side to it. If this is the case, you will need to further heat the horn and place it on a wooden block in which channels have been carved, and under pressure of the jack squeeze the hot horn into the channel to try and remove the concave.
Make these wood blocks yourself to suit a variety of horns and concave sections.
You may need to slightly flatten the horn once more after the wood block.

On the next page you will see more home made equipment. Another type of press which
this time has its own shaped shells for squeezing along the length of the horn.
